Horses and Gifts

GiftHorse2Have you ever heard the phrase, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth?” It’s a peculiar saying to say the least. What does a horse’s mouth and gifts have to do with one another?

As a horse ages its gums recede causing the teeth to look elongated. It appears the saying came about back in the 1500’s. Back then people actually gave horses as gifts. Some recipients of a horse gift would look at the horses gums to see if the horse was old and undesirable, (determined by the receding gums), or young and desirable. This practice of inspecting the horses mouth was considered ungrateful, thus the saying, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”

Sometimes we do that with God’s blessings don’t we? We cry out to God for a need only he can fill and when he answers that prayer we might disregard or completely miss the blessing, because it doesn’t look like the picture in our mind.

Abba, Father, Papa, may we always have your eyes to see your blessings for what they really are….your lovely gifts to us because you love us. May we see them through your eyes and not our own and may we always be grateful for what you provide. Amen.

  1. It’s true that sometimes the Lord answers our prayers in a way other than we expected or even wanted, but He knows far better than we do and He has plans for us, to give us “hope and a future.” Sometimes we just have to trust Him and believe that “all things work together for good for those who love God”.

    1. So true, Whitney. And, how wondrous His grace is even when we willing reject or miss his blessings. As you stated, He uses all things for the good of those who love him. He is such an awesome Dad!!!

  2. This is very true.

In my walk I have constantly found that I thought He was leading me here while all the while He was leading me there. A good example is when I thought He wanted me to go to Central America as a teacher while He was leading me to China. I do not believe we could have acomplished as much in Central America as we did in China.

God bless you with peace, love and joy.

    1. It is so awesome when we follow God’s lead and the blessings he has for us there. Even when we choose not to He still uses that for our good because we love him and He has called us to his purpose! Thank you for stopping by to read my blog. God bless you as you continue to serve others through Him!

      1. That is so true about Him having a purpose for us and us nit wanting to go but having an obediant heart.

God bless you with peace, love and joy.
