The People of Connecticut acknowledging with gratitude, the good providence of God, in having permitted them to enjoy a free government; do, in order more effectually to define, secure, and perpetuate the liberties, rights and privileges which they have derived from their ancestors; hereby, after a careful consideration and revision, ordain and establish the following constitution and form of civil government.

We, the people of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, grateful to Almighty God for the civil and religious liberty which He hath so long permitted us to enjoy, and looking to Him for a blessing upon our endeavors to secure and to transmit the same, unimpaired, to succeeding generations, do ordain and establish this Constitution of government.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

This is not a history lesson, nor is it meant to stir up a debate. I was struck by something I read this morning and it led me to think about how my Country, for the most part, use to find It’s identity in God. Thus, some of our states preambles listed above as well as a sentence taken from our Country’s Declaration of Independence.

What I read this morning was Deuteronomy 4:6-7: If you obey them carefully, you will display your wisdom and intelligence to the surrounding nations. When they hear about these laws, they will exclaim, ‘What other nation is as wise and prudent as this!’ For what great nation has a god as near to them as the LORD our God is near to us whenever we call on him?

Moses was giving the Israelites instructions and laws to follow as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. If they obeyed God they would be a wise and prudent nation; their wisdom and intelligence would not go unnoticed by other nations. I believe the founding fathers of my Country understood and even practiced this. They understood the exhortation of Psalm 33:12;

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!

My dear ones, I encourage you to pray for your country, wherever you are around the world. That as one we would seek God for our countries as we do for one another. How awesome it would be to know world peace because each country of the world finds its identity in God and their wisdom and intelligence is displayed to one another.
